by Dr. Rahul Jandial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Life-lessons-from-a-brain-surgeon.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Life-lessons-from-a-brain-surgeon-178x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Life-lessons-from-a-brain-surgeon-178x300.jpeg 178w, https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Life-lessons-from-a-brain-surgeon.jpeg 592w, https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Life-lessons-from-a-brain-surgeon-178x300@2x.jpeg 356w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/><\/a>When I became interested in neuroscience, I bought the book written by Dr. Rahul Jandial, &#8220;Life Lessons from a brain surgeon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised to learn that in the second year of Medical University, the students take an exam called Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam, which is <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>&#8220;an\u00a0eight-hour multiple-choice test on\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>anatomy, biochemistry, behavioral sciences, genetics, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, plate tectonics, quantum mechanics, rocket science, and the Upper Paleolithic history of Siberia&#8221;.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was really interested to find out about my aging brain:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;There is good news about the aging brain: more people than ever are living into their\u00a0eighties and beyond in excellent cognitive health as the rate of Alzheimer\u2019s plummets. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>So, even though the total number of people with dementia is increasing because people are living longer, the risk of getting dementia is actually lower. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Since the 1970s, in fact, the risk of dementia due to any cause has fallen by 20 percent every decade, proving that lifestyle plays a major role in how our brains age, and that dementia is not an immutable force.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was glad to learn that by having at least a high-school degree and by doing constant sport, I can increase my chances of not getting dementia:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>&#8220;Numerous studies have shown that education plays an important role in reducing the risk of later developing dementia.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>The reason why education pays off is because of something called cognitive reserve: people with extra brain power (thanks in part to extra education) can afford to lose more before showing obvious signs of decline.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>&#8220;Physical activity turns out to be one of the absolute best ways to maintain and even improve cognitive health.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>Countless studies have shown that exercise programs directly contribute to brain function&#8221;.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kindle, 2021<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I became interested in neuroscience, I bought the book written by Dr. Rahul Jandial, &#8220;Life Lessons from a brain surgeon.&#8221;
