{"id":7357,"date":"2023-03-10T10:14:07","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T10:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/?p=7357\/"},"modified":"2024-07-04T10:43:14","modified_gmt":"2024-07-04T10:43:14","slug":"age-proof-professor-rose-anne-kenny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/en\/2023\/03\/10\/age-proof-professor-rose-anne-kenny\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;AGE PROOF&#8221; by Professor Rose Anne Kenny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Age-proof.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Age-proof-195x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Age-proof-195x300.jpeg 195w, https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Age-proof.jpeg 651w, https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Age-proof-195x300@2x.jpeg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a>I am fifty-two years old, and I am interested in the process of aging. <br \/>\nTherefore I read books written by specialists who:<br \/>\n\u2013 explain what is happening to our bodies while we are aging<br \/>\n\u2013 describe the research done so far on aging <br \/>\n\u2013 and they show us what we can do to remain active even as we grow old.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The book\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAge Proof,\u201d<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0written by Rose Anne Kenny, Professor of medical gerontology, was one I liked a lot.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And the reason I liked it so much was that the Professor is a keen believer in doing sports, no matter the age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;<em>Sarcopenia<\/em> is closely aligned with physical activity and exercise.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Its name comes from the Greek words <em>sarx<\/em> and <em>penia, <\/em>signifying &lt;&lt;loss of flesh&gt;&gt;, which is indicative of the core features of sarcopenia&#8211;skeletal muscle loss.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>It is a progressive and generalised ageing muscle disease characterised by loss in muscle mass, weaker muscle strength and infiltration of muscles with fat.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>The main factors that cause <em>sarcopenia<\/em> are ageing, chronic disease, low physical activity and poor nutrition.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>We loose 15 percent of muscle strength due to decline in muscle mass every ten years after age 50.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>This loss in strength accelerates after the age of 70.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>This is why it becomes even more important to increase exercise, not decrease it with age and to ensure that we both do aerobic and resistant exercises.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>We have to work much harder after age 50 and harder again after 70 to prevent age-related <em>sarcopenia<\/em>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I found extraordinary the example of Charles Eugster, a retired dentist, who, at eighty-seven years old, started to train himself for bodybuilding competitions and did well.<br \/>\nAnd at ninety-three years old gave a speech at TED talks about the importance of work, diet, and exercise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kindle, 2023<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am fifty-two years old, and I am interested in the process of aging.
