{"id":5333,"date":"2024-08-22T05:53:17","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T05:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/?p=5333\/"},"modified":"2024-08-22T07:25:10","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T07:25:10","slug":"great-thinkers-the-school-of-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/en\/2024\/08\/22\/great-thinkers-the-school-of-life\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;GREAT THINKERS&#8221; &#8211; The School of Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Great-thinkers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Great-thinkers-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Great-thinkers-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/www.exlibrismeis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Great-thinkers.jpg 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a>Before it was <strong>&#8220;The School of Life,&#8221;<\/strong> the site was called &#8220;The Book of Life.&#8221; <br \/>\nThis was the original site invented by Alain de Botton.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I was so impressed with the easiness in reading the articles that I have printed and gather them into a file. <br \/>\nIt was exactly like I was a baby and somebody fed me the food already chewed.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Many years later, I bought the book <strong>&#8220;Great thinkers,&#8221;<\/strong> and I discovered that many of the articles I have read were gathered in this volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">One of the most exciting thing that I discovered was the philosopher<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> La Rochefoucauld:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;La Rochefoucauld developed the literary genre for which he has become known: that of the maxim, or aphorism, a pithy statement that deftly captures a dark insight into the human soul, reminding us of a wise and often uncomfortable truth.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;It is easier to be wise for others than for oneself.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Everybody complains of his memory, but nobody of his judgement.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Our misdeeds are easily forgotten when they are known only to ourselves.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8220;La Rochefoucauld wrote as he did because he wanted his ideas to persuade people whom he knew had little time and would not necessarily be on his side. <br \/>\nIf most philosophers since have felt no need to write with elegance, wit and concision, it is because they have trusted that, so long as one idea&#8217;s are important, the style in which one delivers them is of no issue.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>La Rochefoucauld knew otherwise.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Most of us are so distracted, if someone wants to get a point across to us, they must use all the devices of art to seize our attention and cauterise our boredom for the necessary span.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The history of philosophy would have been very different if its practitioners had all imagined themselves to be writing for an impatient non-professional audience with meandering minds in the midst of a chatty Parisian saloon.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;For a woman hell is old age.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Age makes men both sillier and wiser.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Plenty of people despise money, but few know how to give it away.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Publisher: <strong>The School of Life, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before it was &#8220;The School of Life,&#8221; the site was called &#8220;The Book of Life.&#8221; This was the original site invented by Alain de Botton.
