\nover its empty nest.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Your vacant room<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nis a still-life framed by the unclosed door;<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nread by sunlight, an open book on the floor.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I fold the laundry; hang your flower dress<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nin darkness. Forget-me-nots.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the tall fence, I hear horse-chestnuts<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\ncounting themselves.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nThen autumn; Christmas.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nYou come and go, singing. Then ice; snowdrops.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Our home hides its face in hands of silence.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I knew mothering, but not this other thing<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nwhich hefts my heart each day. Heavier.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nNow I know.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the shy sorrow. It will not speak up.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I play one chord on the piano;<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nit vanishes, tactful,<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nas dusk muffles the garden; a magpie staring from its branch.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nThe marble girl standing by the bench.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

From the local church, bells like a spelling.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nAnd the evening star like a text.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>
\nAnd then what next…”<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
